Abstract In a historical context of social differenciation, questionning about the “fragmentation” of the social identity makes perfect sense. However, to avoid falling into the trap of a substantialist conception of social identity, which is very difficult for “fragmentation” of identity theorists, an other approach is possible. Exposed at each new experience to the risk of fragmentation, social identity would be in constant restructuring, searching for internal coherence of the Self. This conception, applied in an ongoing research on process of commitment
in three associations promoting the ideology of Cultural Creatives, implies to not only pay attention to what is happening in the concrete observed situation. Biographic interviews will enable to find other forms of socialisation, in the past or in present time, which could have been decisive in the act of commitment.
