Résumé
Madagascar est la seule île tropicale du Monde dont la capitale ne soit pas située sur une côte. Au contraire, Antananarivo -sa capitale est située presqu’exactement en position centrale de l’île qui affiche, au-delà de cette simple bizarrerie, un modèle d’organisation spatiale tout à fait particulier. Cet article part des travaux très approfondis de Jean-Pierre Raison qui soulevaient déjà le caractère étonnant de l’organisation spatiale insulaire malgache et notamment l’énigme constituée par les fortes densités de peuplement sur les hautes terres centrales. Il mobilise l’analyse chorématique notamment le chorotype de l’île haute tropicale, la démographie, l’histoire ainsi que des avancées scientifiques récentes en génétique et archéologie pour proposer de nouvelles pistes d’interprétation de cette exception spatiale.
Abstract
Madagascar is the only tropical island in the world whose capital is not located on a coast. On the contrary, Antananarivo - its capital - is located almost exactly in the center of the island, which, beyond this simple oddity, displays a highly distinctive spatial organization model. This article builds on Jean-Pierre Raison’s extensive work, which has already highlighted the astonishing nature of the Malagasy island’s spatial organization, and in particular the enigma of high population densities in the central highlands. It combines geography, demography, history and recent scientific advances in genetics and archaeology to suggest new ways of interpreting this spatial exception.
